On June 27 1978 at 6:27 p.m. Warsaw time, the "Soyuz-30" spacship, piloted by an international crew, was launched at the Baikonur Cosmodrome on the territory of the Kazakh SSR according to the "Interkosmos" program: the ship's commander was the USSR pilot-cosmonaut Piotr Klimuk and the cosmonaut-researcher Miroslaw Hermaszewski, a citizen of the People Republic of Poland. The news of the first flight of a Polish cosmonaut caused a burst of enthusiasm throughout Poland at the time. The flight was watched with care and respect and was considered a major contribution to the development of Polish science and technical thought. It was the result of an 11-year cooperation between Polish and USSR scientists according of the "Interkosmos" program. The "Soyuz-30" spaceship was launched into orbit by a three-stage "Soyuz" rocket, which was a further development of the "Vostok"-type rocket. The engines of the first stage developed a thrust of 408 000 kG and operated for 120 seconds, the thrust of the second stage reached 96 000 kG and operated for 300 seconds (from the moment of launch from the ground). The engine thrust of the third stage reached 30,000 kg and also operated for 300 seconds, but from the moment of activation. The rocket weighed 300 000 kg at the time of launch. The first stage of the rocket, consisting of 4 separate elements, separated at an altitude of 45 km, the second - 170 km, the third - 300 km. The flight was successfully completed on July 5, 1978.
